The King of Comedy. Unnerving, prescient and funny. Was Scorsese still on the blow? Some parts of the movie suggest he was, like this scene right here.
While the kind of adulation Jerry Lewis’ character receives is pretty ridiculous especially in the first scene - don’t get me wrong I thought the scene was amazing, but do I really believe a talk show host would cause Beatles level fan fervor? No I do not. Not that it even matters because the film perfectly captures our culture’s fucked up understanding of fame and celebrity. I’m not sure how the protagonist was received when the movie came out in ‘82, maybe they thought he was too over the top, too obsessed, an out there lunatic or something to that effect. But with my 2009 eyes, all I could think was “Yup.” I won’t spoil anything, but for those of you who’ve seen it, isn’t the ending 100% spot-on accurate?
